gender equality

Equality……sounds great. Gender equality in the society…..sounds even better. Well, I am not going to write about what all people talk about - that women have become empowered and are equal to men nowadays. I am going to address the issue that, are women really as equal to men as we say these days? Yes, it is very fashionable these days to talk about gender equality and probably you’d be seen as old fashioned and biased if you didn’t say so…..but are women really treated as equal? That is a moot point. Men and women both go out to work. While men are comparatively tension free when they are in the office, women have so many things to worry about at the back of their minds – whether it is about the welfare of their children, spending quality time with them, homework, tests, maid etc. You’d often come across women not attending a get together after office because she’d rather reach home early and spend some good time with her family. Not just that, the family including the husband, see it as a waste of time on the wife’s part. However, it is absolutely fine for a man to give a call home and tell that he’d be having dinner out with colleagues or friends.

Well, weekend is a time for the whole family to be together especially in today’s world when life is so busy and hectic. There are so many things to catch up on.  After marriage, it becomes even more important to balance our work and personal life. While many women may not even think of joining any individual activity or any intellectual club for the purpose of self improvement during weekends, men have no qualms about it and just go ahead and join it. How would a man feel if the wife said that she wants to join a public speaking club to improve her communication skills and spend every Sunday attending that? Would it be acceptable? Would it not be seen as a waste of time, when according to them, she could actually be using that time to cater to the needs of the family? What do you say????
